War at Sea: An American Revolution

The American Revolution took place during the years of 1776-1783. Some say the war was fought on land and won on sea. John Paul Jones, perhaps one of the greatest Naval Officers, played an important role in the fight for independence. The battles at sea were not recorded in detail. One was recorded in moderate detial though, in Falmborugh Head, Scotland a huge battle took place. John Paul Jones was there with his small fleet ready to chalange the super power of the world. Jones rammed his ship into another ship called the Serapsis and yelled “Have you struck your colors? I have not yet begun to fight.” The two ships were lashed together and the battle broke out on the ships. The fighting stopped when a hand grenade was thrown from the Richard next to the ammunition on the Serapsis , which ignited and caused a huge explosion. The explosion won one of the most important naval victories of the entire war. America was begining to split from the English empire.

The Americans are starting a new life in America, but the British don’t approve. They are very upset. They will lose a lot; there power, profit, and control. Since the British don’t like it, they are taking a three month boat ride over to America. There will be over 200 British prison, supplies and battle ships joining them. When the British arrived they were just hoping to scare the men right out and surrender, but the British only encouraged them.

The War started in 1775. The waters were mildly cold. When the ships arrive the patriots had already prepared them self to fight. New Yorkwas one of the many battles the Patriots and British Fought. The men were first attacked by the British from their ships. “There were at least 3 ships and many men firing at us”, one of the survivors wrote. After the British had finished firing approximately 100 men went out to gather the survivors. Those survivors were taken to Whitby. The first prison ship that had arrived. The prisoners were allowed to take their belongings with them. It didn’t matter; the ship was previously a cattle ship, so it was filled with diseases. The prisoners burned the ship down leaving no survivors. That was the beginning of the American Revolutionary War 1775.

Because the Americans were Allies with the French and Indians they helped out in the war. The Indians would lure to British out of their ships into the wood where they were sitting ducks, the British didn’t have a chance. The general surrendered, but that wasn’t the last of the British.

In September 1779, the greatest American victory took place in Britain’s backyard, on the North Sea. After the battle at sea in 1779, Captain John Paul Jones, captured the British warship called Serapis. At last, the British captain of the Serapis lowered his flag and surrendered.

At last, in 1783, we the American got the victory of independence. They fought for their Declaration of Independence. One of the reasons that American won was the commend from Captain John Paul Jones. He was our great commander and leader of the American fought at sea. He was called “A Father of American Navy.” We should be thankful about what he done to our country of United States of America. We should remember this battle as long as possible. Hope to have peaceful America in the future…….
